Westfalen is an area in the region of Germany consisting of five provinces. It is the westernmost area in the country, and one of the most strategically important areas in the game. Extremely resource rich, it also straddles the great Rhine River. Capture of the area by a western enemy of Germany carries the twin benefits of crippling the German economy while simultaneously leaving its heartland open to advance.
The region is roughly named after the traditional German region of Westphalia, though it also includes areas now found in other states.
Area description[]
Westfalen is strategically placed land-locked area at the western edge of Germany along the country's borders with the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. To the east are the German areas of Hannover, Hessen, and Baden Wurttemburg. The Netherlands are to the northwest, all within the area by the same name. Most of Belgium as well as Luxembourg along Westfalen's border are within the Wallonia area, but there is a direct connection with Flanders area as well. Finally to the south is the only French area to be adjacent to German territory, Lorraine Alsace.
Geographically, Westfalen is dominated by several features, including the urban center of Essen, the forests of Aachen, and the hilly country in the eastern portions of the area. Additionally, the area is broken up and bordered in several places by major rivers, including the famous Rhine. The climate is temperate northern hemisphere across the entire area, and is often frozen in the winter.
In 1936, Westfalen is home to several military facilities. The northern flank of Germany's western wall runs up through Saarbrucken, Cologne, and Aachen, covering the French and Belgian borders though its minimal nature offer only a level 1 land fort in each province. Air defenses are some of the heaviest in Germany, with level 3 flak in Essen and level 2 flak in Dortmund and Saarbrucken. No air defenses are located in Aachen or Cologne at the start of the 1936 scenario as a result of the Versailles Treaty demilitarization of the Rhineland. The area has an airbase in Essen at level 4.
Events[]
In 1936, Westfalen is still partially demilitarized as a result of the Versailles Treaty. Germany is prohibited by the treaty from placing military forces in the provinces of Aachen or Cologne. Moving a military unit into either province will trigger the militarization of the Rhineland. Failure to do so by Germany will subject the country to regular demonstrations which increase dissent.
